Australian families should now be extremely sceptical of Mr Abbott ever delivering a paid parental leave scheme, especially one that will be massively expensive, costing taxpayers and business $8.8 billion dollars.
He will delay and delay this scheme to the end because he knows the business community will never support or pay for it and most in his ranks have always opposed it, including Mr Abbott himself.
Australians should make no mistake – he has never truly believed in a paid parental leave scheme, he blocked it every step of the way, and today’s policy retreat points to his real views.
Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Peter Anderson
ACCI remains opposed to the Coalition’s proposal to fund its generous paid parental leave scheme by a higher tax on large companies. Although the Coalition has said that its paid parental leave levy is temporary, it’s still not the way to fund community-wide social policy.
