The tragedy
of Aboriginal petrol sniffing has been highlighted in this week’s dramatic NT
coroner’s inquiry. Obviously, solutions are difficult and the problems
complex. But what is the white establishment’s attitude to indigenous
education? Is patronising indigenous Australians the way to go?
Apparently so, judging by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s
attempt to teach the indigenous community financial savvy with this comic, “Moola Talk”.

Blogger
Mr Grumpy
is not impressed – and we tend to agree. He writes: “The problem with Moola
Talk is that it is more patronising than anything One Nation ever produced. If I
was to pick one and just one of the glaring problems with the comic (of course
it has to be a comic, I mean ‘they’ wouldn’t read anything without pictures) it
would be this: Why does being an indigenous person mean that you can not use
proper grammatical and punctuation rules?

Is this what ASIC really thinks
goes on outside their fancy offices?

CRIKEY: There’s another way of looking at this – the style of communication is carefully targetted…
