The Winners: Hamish & Andy’s Reministmas Special enlivened a dull night (and topped under 50’s viewing). The X Factor saw a lot of screeching. Nine’s cricket was fairy floss. Seven benefited in the end.

News & CA: Seven News had an easy win over Nine as the summer break takes hold. The Sydney audiences were again much lower than in Sydney, 280,000 for Seven (416,000 in Melbourne) and 265,000 for Nine (367,000 in Melbourne).

The Stats:

  • FTA: Seven (3 channels) won with a share of 33.2% from Nine (3) on 26.7%, Ten (2), on 20.8% and the ABC (4) with 12.9% and SBS (2), on 6.5%.
  • Main Channel: Seven won with a share of 28.1%, from Ten with 20.3%, Nine third with 19.6%, ABC 1 on 11.4% and SBS ONE with 4.9%.
  • Digital: The nine digital channels had a total FTA share of 15.6%, with GO winning with 5.1%, from 7Mate on 2.9%, 7TWO with 2.1%, Gem on 1.9%, SBS TWO with 1.6%, ABC 2 on 0.7%, ONE on 0.5% and SBC 3 and News 24 on 0.4% each. The digital channels had an FTA share of 11.4% in Sydney (a low) and a high of 19.6% in Perth , with 19.4% in Adelaide as well.
  • Pay TV: Seven won (three channels) with a share of 27.3%, from Nine (3) on 21.9%, Ten (2) was on 17.1%, Pay TV (100 plus channels), 14.7%, the ABC (4), 10.6% and SBS (2), 5.4%. The FTA channels had a share of 85.3% on the night, made up of 12.9% for the nine digitals and 72.4% for the five main channels. Foxtel’s share ranged from a high of 18.2% in Sydney to a low of 12.6% in Adelaide, with 13.1% in Brisbane.
  • Regional: Prime/7Qld won with a share of 34.4% from WIN/NBN on 29.0%, SC Ten with 17.8%, the ABC, 12.7% and SBS on 6.1%. Prime/7Qld won the main channels from WIN/NBN. GO won the digitals from 7Mate and 7TWO. The nine digital channels had an FTA share of 15.6%.

Major Markets: Seven won overall and the main channels in all five metro markets. Ten was second in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Nine was second in the main channels in Sydney and Adelaide. GO won the digitals from either 7TWO, Gem or 7Mate.

Glenn Dyer’s comments: Seven won the second last week of ratings in All People, 18 to 49s and 25 to 54s. Ten won 16 to 39s.

One down, six to go and will we be interested? Nine’s stunt Twenty20 cricket game last night started the official season (the Ashes start this week), and bombed. Not good ahead of the summer, but possibly a sign the public wants quality, not quantity and wants sport that matters, not as just entertainment. The X Factor did well for Seven, but wasn’t the big viewer getter among the younger demos (it did well in 25 to 54s). Hamish & Andy’s Reministmas Special did very well as they always do, while the Twenty20 cricket was solid among some demos (mostly males). Ten won 16 to 39s and 18 to 49s.

TONIGHT: Does it matter? The X Factor decider tonight on Seven. Ten has The 7pm Project, Glee and the final Undercover Boss Australia. Nine has an hour and a half of Two and a Half Men, all of which are down as repeats. Nine also has a repeat of The Mentalist, so summer has started early at the network. If you are interested in tidings from the grassy knoll, the ABC has The Lost JFK Tapes: The Assassination at 9.30pm, promising new footage. (Yawn).
