An Australian family is suffering the same nightmare as Madeleine McCann’s relatives. In the wake of the worldwide search for Madeleine, New Idea is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the safe return of Rahma to her family. Read more about it in this week’s New Idea.

Looks like New Idea‘s $20,000 would be very well-spent … If the following Media Monitors rundown is any guide, the magazine is getting lots of bang for its as yet unspent bucks and plugging their stories on Tom and Katie, Packer’s wedding and Fergie in the same breath:

Maddie was kidnapped from her hotel room in Portugal. 650 children disappear in Australia each year. The vast majority parents taking children after break-ups. Freda Briggs says children will place themselves in danger, rather than do the sensible thing. Out of more than 500 children, only one lost in a large store would go to a shop assistant. Eighteen months ago, a child was taken from a bed she shared with her two sisters. A search involving hundreds of volunteers has not found the toddler. New Idea wants to offer a reward. Brecht says children need to be taught how to not open doors to strangers.

Price has been talking about Madeleine McCann, missing UK toddler, and notes the involvement of David Beckham, soccer player in the search for her. He says everyone has forgotten the abduction in 2005 of Rahma el-Dennaoui, missing toddler. He welcomes editor, New Idea , who has put forward an idea to raise money for the search for her. She goes through the details of Rahma’s disappearance and says they have offered a $20,000 reward for information. She says NSW Police still have officers working on the case, but they have no new leads. Her parents are praying for her return and do not like making public statements, which has allowed her case to be forgotten. Endicott says McCann’s parents seem to have been advised well on how to keep her case in the public eye and keep the search going.

New Idea is putting up a $20,000 reward and the New Idea editor-in-chief is interviewed. Robyn Foyster notes the similarities between the two cases. She notes that many people have not heard of Rahma while Madeleine’s case is big news. Rahma is three this week. Koch wonders why Rahma’s case has not had such a profile. Foyster says Rahma’s family are too bereft to even give an interview. Maybe the difficulty in pronouncing the name has had an influence on publicity? The police are desperate for any information and are happy about the reward. Foyster says the case is unbelievable and terrible and hopefully the reward may trigger some new information. Koch says good on you.
