The Winners: Just two programs after 7pm attracted more than a million viewers. That tells us the offering was pretty weak. Nine will get a shock from the ratings crash for Top Design. Offspring ended the year with 997,000 viewers, but Ten says it had 1.03 million. Ten won the night anyway.
- MasterChef Australia (Ten) (7.30pm) — 1.533 million
- Seven News (6pm) — 1.296 million
- The Block (Nine) (7pm) — 1.243 million
- Today Tonight (Seven) (6.30pm) — 1.242 million
- Nine News (6pm) — 1.101 million
The Losers: Angry Boys, 465,000 at 9pm on the ABC.
The biggest loser on the night was Nine’s Top Design at 8pm: 799,000 — it was down 357,000, or a third, from its debut last week of 1.156 million people. It’s dead, even though it was sort of solid in 16 to 39s and 18 to 49s. It’s an expensive program and needs the widest appeal.
News & CA: Nine News won Sydney and Melbourne, Seven News won the rest. TT won everywhere bar Sydney where ACA won. A weak night all round.

That’s a trend to be watched because of the effort Ten has made in cutting pure sport and turning ONE into a clone of 7mate and GO.

Glenn Dyer’s comments: A weak night of viewing for the audience compared with Tuesday and Sunday nights.
- MasterChef had a national audience of 2.078 million viewers with 545,000 in the regions and 1.533 million in the metros.
- The Block had 1.740 million viewers nationally, made up of 497,000 in regional areas and 1.243 million in the five metro markets.
TONIGHT: The Block tonight on Nine. MasterChef on Ten. Nothing much on Seven: it has a Vicar of Dibley repeat at 7.30pm, which will flag, then starts a new series, Law and Order Los Angeles, after that at 8.40pm. That’s going to be tested with the weak lead-in. The ABC is viewer-free viewing tonight. The Tour de France on SBS.
