Glenn Dyer’s comments: Nine’s night as young men did indeed watch Hamish and Andy’s Gap Year at 8.30pm, even though it was basically one of the worst specials they have made so far in their TV careers. But it didn’t really help the various The Footy Shows which had a national audience of 743,000, with 339,000 in Melbourne, 133,000 in Sydney (both about normal) and a slightly higher 92,000 in Brisbane. Hamish and Andy’s Gap Year was big in Melbourne, their home market, with 551,000 people watching. That was after 489,000 watched The Block, which is also based in Melbourne.
Seven was never in the hunt and never intended to, much the same way as Nine avoided a contest on Tuesday nights for much of the year until The Block arrived.
Gee, Ten pulled its finger out and (after reading Crikey), went to Shanghai live on the ONE channels and showed the wonderful swim of James Magnussen in the men’s 100 metres freestyle. And why couldn’t it have also been done on the main channel? After all, all Ten was showing was a repeat of Law and Order SVU, which was hardly a ratings winner last night.About 119,000 watched the final on ONE. Can’t help feeling that Ten is a touch guilty about its treatment of the World Swimming Titles, which is a genuine sports event and not the fishing, power boating, etc, stuff it has been filling ONE with.
Tonight: AFL/NRL on Seven and Nine. Better Homes and Gardens on Seven, The Block on Nine, MasterChef master class on Ten.
Saturday: AFL on Ten, Foxtel. NRL on Foxtel. Kingdom on the ABC: nothing else worth watching except movie repeats of repeats.
Sunday: The morning chats, then NRL and AFL on Nine, Seven and Foxtel. Sunday Night on Seven at 6.30pm with a claimed new angle on the Joanne Lees/Peter Falconio story. 60 Minutes on Nine at 7.30pm, after The Block at 6.30pm. MasterChef on Ten from 7.30pm. Midsomer Murders on the ABC at 8.30pm.
