Vale People Power: just over 2100 votes and 3.1% of the vote doesn’t a revolution make. Still, Crikey’s Don Quixote, Stephen Mayne, wasn’t the only pundit whose wishes didn’t come true. Over at the Herald, Alan Ramsey was hoping, very hard, for a Labor loss, to punish the party for killing off Mark Latham and installing – in his view – a dud candidate.
What can we draw from Saturday’s result? First, when the Coalition doesn’t run a candidate in a safe Labor seat, Labor romps in. Second, Kim Beazley’s run of good fortune since taking over from Latham shows no sign of ending. Third, if Beazley is smart he won’t take his advice from excitable pundits like Glenn Milne, who in The Australian this morning has Labor storming the barricades – nearly three years out from a general election.
