The Glenn Dyer breakdown: The Australian F1 Grand Prix. Did anyone catch it on Ten yesterday evening? Yes, 1.399 million people caught it on Ten’s main channel, and another 306,000 on ONE, making a total metro audience of 1.705 million. The combined national total for the race on Ten was an impressive 1.614 million. Add the ONE simulcast audience and it totalled 1.920 million.
But it was really a tale of two cities, Melbourne (605,000 on the main channel, 129,000 on ONE) and Sydney (327,000 on the main channel, 71,000 on ONE). Sydney and Melbourne had 66% of the five city main channel audience.
Apart from that it was Seven’s night, again thanks to My Kitchen Rules and Sunday Night. The Grand Prix coverage on the main channel finished at 6.45pm, and led into Young Talent Time. It didn’t help. That program averaged 689,000. Without a killer show on another channel, Ten’s cultish Homeland should have done better at 8.45pm than the 886,000. Modern Family managed 940,000 at 7.45pm, New Girl, straight after, 891,000, which is OK but nowhere near as good as earlier in the year.
Nine’s The Great Barrier Reef at 6.30pm, 965,000, down 200,000 on last week’s 1.170 million. Seven’s Castle at 8.30pm, 891,000, enough to win the timeslot.
Last week: Seven by a mile, again, in the metro markets and in the regions. Seven had nine of the top 10 programs in the metro markets and nationally (including the regions) as well. That included the first eight most watched programs.
Tonight: News and current affairs on the ABC from 7pm. Revenge and My Kitchen Rules on Seven. The Big Bang Theory on Nine. The Biggest Loser on Ten. And the Australian Swimming Championships are back on Ten’s main channel. NRL on Pay TV.

Metro News & CA: Ten News at 5pm was pre-empted in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide by the grand prix, while The Project was also a victim, not aired anywhere last night on Ten. Nine News won Sydney and Melbourne, Seven News won the rest.

Metro FTA: Seven (3 channels) won with a share of 31.3% from Nine (3) on 25.7%, Ten (3) was on 23.9%, the ABC (4) was on 14.5% and SBS (2) ended on 4.7%. Main Channels: Seven won with 24.9% from Nine on 18.9%, Ten was on 17.0%, ABC 1 ended with 11.8% and SBS ONE finished with 3.9%.
Metro Digital: GO won the digitals with a share of 4.4%, from 7TWO on 3.7%, with Eleven on 3.6%, ONE on 3.3%, 7mate was on 2.7%, Gem ended on 2.4%, ABC 2, 1.4%, SBS TWO, 0.8%, News 24, 0.7% and ABC 3, 0.5%. That was an FTA viewing share last night of 24.5%.
Pay TV: Seven (3 channels) won with a share of 25.9% from Nine (3) on 21.2%, Ten (3) was on 19.8%, Pay TV (200 plus channels) ended with 14.8%, the ABC (4) was on 12.0% and SBS (2) ended on 3.9%. The 15 FTA channels had a total share last night of 85.2%, with the 10 digital channels on 19.4% and the five main channels, 65.8%.

Regional: Prime/7Qld (3 channels) won with a share of 32.5%, from WIN/NBN (3) on 29.6%, SC Ten (3) ended on 20.4%, the ABC (4) was on 13.1% and SBS (2) finished with 4.1%. Prime/7Qld won the main channels with 24.1% from WIN/NBN on 20.9%. GO won the digitals with 5.9% from 7TWO on 4.9% and ONE on 4.3%. The 10 digital channels had an FTA share last night of 28.5%

- Sunday Night — 600,000
- Nine News — 580,000
- 60 Minutes — 570,000

Major Metro Markets: Seven won everywhere overall and the main channels bar Melbourne, where the grand prix on the main channel and ONE (plus the swimming) helped Ten win overall, but it shared the main channels with Seven. Nine was third. Everywhere else, Nine was second. Outside of Sydney and Melbourne, viewers didn’t care for the grand prix because it didn’t do wonders for Ten’s ratings in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. GO won the digitals in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. It shared Adelaide with 7TWO, which won Melbourne.
