With the polls indicating no quick movement back to the Government, the options available for Prime Minister John Howard to hold the election are narrowing.
A snap early poll would clearly be electoral suicide, so late September, after the APEC conference in Sydney is well out of the way, becomes the first realistic available date.
The real bookmakers have not yet framed a market on the election date, so this intrepid former odds-maker suggests the following as a starting point:
