Throwing out the garbage? Bags of shredded stuff are lined up in the Min Wing outside Amanda Vanstone’s office. Is someone throwing out the garbage? Is the Prime Minister about to?
Bronny burns her bridges. What motivated Bronwyn Bishop’s dummy spit over child care in the Sunday Telegraph last weekend? It looked very well orchestrated. Making child care deductible for women earning over $75,000 is the very worst kind of middle class welfare – yet Bishop has got very stropping in defence of her design. “I cannot agree with any man who makes a judgment about what is best for a woman,” she said. Including her former hero, John Howard. She penned a letter of attack to the Tele, who turned it into a lead story – and then pushed the policy further in characteristically bolshie Bronny style on television news. Northern Beaches Liberals are either nonplussed – or angered. Why would she make such comments? They aren’t decent pre-preselection positioning. Are they a farewell note? Does she know her time is up – that many, many Liberals in her electorate and in Canberra would like to see the back of her? That’s unlikely with Bronwyn. So what gives?
Don’t give up the day job. Don’t give up the day job, voters appear to be saying to poor old Petey. They actually like what you’re doing. Morgan polling shows a resounding 62% of voters approve of the way Dollar Sweetie is handling his job as Treasurer. 28% disapprove and 10% can’t say. As Gary Morgan observes, “This is not always the case for a Treasurer”.
ACT Liberals plan ahead. Troy Williams – yes, the bloke behind the first campaigner poster of the 2007 poll – is planning ahead. Up on his website are media releases dated February, March and May 2007. Indeed, so organised is Troy that he even has a release already up for 1 September.
Yet another People Power puzzle. The People Power political party has an idiotic name, no voter appeal and its ruling clique – or the people who claim to be charge this week – appear to be even more misguided and muddle-headed than usual. They say the party’s purged the quixotic Stephen Mayne. “This decision represents a clean break by People Power from any association with Crikey … ” spokesman Vern Hughes is quoted as saying. Vern, you’re thick. People Power is an embarrassment. Crikey has never had any association with your party. Or any other. Geddit?
