JIMMY CARTER
Everybody’s favourite ex-president, Nobel Peace Prize winner Jimmy Carter is the Democrat’s democrat and, despite his refusal to endorse either candidate in January, he was clearly all for Obama. The background info on Carter the man, president and Obama cheerleader:
A President of Peace. The outstanding achievement of the Carter presidency was the peace settlement between Israel and Egypt. Over 13 days of meetings at the presidential retreat, Camp David, Carter persuaded President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel to end the 31-year state of war between their countries. Egypt was the first of Israel’s Arab neighbors to make peace with the Jewish state. – Academy of Achievement
A Life in Brief. Jimmy Carter’s one-term presidency is remembered for the events that overwhelmed it -— inflation, energy crisis, war in Afghanistan, and hostages in Iran. After one term in office, voters strongly rejected Jimmy Carter’s honest but gloomy outlook in favor of Ronald Reagan’s telegenic optimism. In the past two decades, however, there has been wider recognition that Carter, despite a lack of experience, confronted several huge problems with steadiness, courage, and idealism. – Miller Centre of Public Affairs
President, peacemaker, peanut farmer. He became governor of Georgia in the wake of the civil rights upheavals of the ’60s, he arrived at the White House amid the aftershocks of Watergate, and now he travels the world “waging peace.” — CNN
