The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Seven won the metro markets overall, Nine won the main channels. Seven was stronger in Adelaide and Perth, Nine was stronger on the East Coast (thanks to the AFL Footy Show and The Block in Melbourne).

Apart from that, a fairly average night.

The Block managed a million viewers in metro markets, which is OK, but not brilliant. Worryingly for Nine, The Celebrity Apprentice was again weak.

The Footy Shows averaged 750,000 nationally, with 333,000 of those watch the AFL version in Melbourne from 9.30pm. The NRL program averaged 170,000 in Sydney and 105,000 in Brisbane.

There was a lot of talk about how Foxtel’s move to screen all nine AFL games each round live might hurt Seven. Well, this weekend, Seven will show seven of the nine games live either nationally, or to a market or markets where the teams are based. For example:

  • Tonight’s game, St Kilda v. Freo will go across the network on the main channel and 7mate
  • Tomorrow afternoon sees Carlton v Essendon playing at 3pm the afternoon and broadcast in Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane.
  • The 7.30pm game, West Coast v Hawthorn will be seen in Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
  • The Collingwood v Port game in the afternoon will be seen in Adelaide only.
  • Adelaide v Western Sydney from 4.30pm will be seen in Adelaide and Sydney.
  • The Brisbane v Gold Coast game will be seen in the Brisbane area at night.
  •  Sunday arvo’s game, Sydney v North Melbourne will go across the network on the main channel and 7mate.
  • The Geelong v Richmond and Melbourne v Footscray games won’t be seen anywhere on Seven.

The next NRL contract has to have that flexibility.
