The Glenn Dyer breakdown: Nine’s House Husbands had a promising start on Father’s Day, but Big Brother was flattened by Sunday Night on Seven, falling below a million viewers on a Sunday night for the first time since it started. Last week the first eviction had 1.250 million metro and 1.660 million national viewers. The second eviction last night was watched by 949,000 metro viewers and 1.37 million nationally. That’s a fall of 25% in a week in metro markets which will be very painful if it continues.
House Husbands and 60 Minutes pushed it down the rankings in the main demos, so no pain there for Nine. But is not the best look because this program has a few more weeks to run. The drop for Big Brother was a big surprise. Nine’s problem is that Big Brother is not liked in Adelaide and Perth, or in regional markets.
House Husbands was the most watched show in Sydney and Melbourne, but finished down the list in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
Ten, of course, ran fourth, again, behind a strong ABC1. After the usually strong ABC 1 line up tonight, the ABC will be in a good position to beat Ten into 3rd spot for a 4th week in a row.
The ABC’s Paralympics coverage had 60,000 metro and 674,000 national viewers for the highlights at 6pm and 210,000 metro and 305,000 national viewers from 7pm to 11pm for the day’s coverage on ABC 2. ABC 2 shared the night in metro markets and won in regional markets with its coverage.
Tonight: The usual four hours or more of news and current affairs on ABC 1. The Paralympics on ABC 2. Big Brother on Nine and the next Underbelly: Badness. Will the steady loss of viewers see it fall below a million metro viewers? The X Factor on Seven. Not much on Ten.
Last week: For the third week in a row Ten was pushed it of third into 4th spot by the ABC and ABC 1. Ten has a slightly better week, its nightly share didn’t dip to the low of 6.5% in metro markets as it did a week ago. Seven won all people, won the main channels and the digital channels in metro markets. But Nine, through WIN/NBN won the regional markets.
Nine won Sydney, and while Seven won overall in Melbourne and Brisbane, Nine won the main channels (where the real action is every night). But big wins in Adelaide and Perth pulled Seven up over Nine for the week in metro markets. Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War and Big Brother meant Nine did better than Seven in the demos.
On Pay TV, Friday night’s Hawthorn v West Coast game with 325,000 viewers on Fox Footy was the most watched program of the week. For a rare time an AFL game out rated the NRL, which provided the next two most-watched programs.

Seven won Adelaide as well with Nine third and won Melbourne overall. But Nine won the main channels in Melbourne and had solid wins in Sydney and Brisbane. Those big wins in Adelaide and Perth saw Seven get home overall, but not in the main channels. ABC 2 won the digitals in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, but 7mate had big wins in Adelaide and Perth where the Paralympics don’t have the same draw.
