How private is a “private conversation” with the Prime Minister of Australia?
This morning, Mr Howard decided to let the listeners of ABC Radio National’s Breakfast program into the details of his private conversations with the Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks. When asked why the Victorian Government refuses to join up with Canberra’s $10 billion water reform plan, the PM replied:
“You say the Victorian Government won’t budge. That wasn’t what Mr Bracks told me the last time we discussed this matter. I’m sorry to have to say that Mr Bracks is playing some sort of a double game. When he has private conversations with me he indicates the Victorian Government is reconsidering its position, and yet he goes out and says something to the opposite … He has told me privately that (Victoria) is looking at coming on board and just needs a bit more time …”
Of course, most private conversations with the Prime Minister stay private. A few years ago, in response to a question about his discussions with Peter Costello, it suited the PM for that conversation to stay private:
“Look, I talk to Mr Costello on numerous occasions, and of course I’ve spoken to him, about his visit and, of course, I’ve spoken to him about this matter, but I’m not going to go into the details of a private conversation with the deputy leader of my Party.”
And in 2004, when pressed about a sensitive private discussion he’d had with broadcaster Alan Jones, the PM replied: “Well it’s a private conversation.”
So be warned. If you happen to have a “private conversation” with the head of the Australian Government, it may only remain private as long as it suits the Prime Minister’s immediate political requirements.
