Nine won and the win included Adelaide for the first time as The Voice again topped the ratings (2.850 million national/ 2.057 million metro/ 794,000 regional) followed by My Kitchen Rules on Seven (2.252 million national/ 1.540 million metro/ 712,000 regional). But Nine still can’t win over sceptical Perth. The winning margin in Brisbane was also a bit closer than last week. Nine also won big in the regional markets. But compared with a year ago, when The Voice launched, Nine’s audience last night was down 21% in 16-to-54 demographic, according to Sydney’s Fusion Strategy.
Ten was very weak, the ABC stronger with its news and current affairs line-up. Australian Story (1.067 million national/ 711,000 metro/ 366,000 regional) ended its two=parter on the America’s Cup win 30 years this September by Australia II. Coming on the night of the day of the first win by an Australian in the US Masters, it nicely made the point that while the sports writers gushed and gushed yesterday and this morning about that win, the bigger, nationally important victory was Australia II back in 1983 — it galvanised a nation, unlike yesterday’s win by Adam Scott, great as it was. But don’t tell the pack of myopic sports journos.
Yesterday morning’s win by golfer Adam Scott in the US masters was watched by around 600,000 people in the five metro markets (and a peak of around 708,000) on Ten for the dramatic playoff. Some 60,000 watched the final round on Foxtel. Saturday evening’s Sydney win by Black Caviar was watched by 1.05 million viewers across the country.
Programming update: Don’t say the ABC doesn’t react to poor ratings. Last Wednesday night Tractor Monkeys and the Elegant Gentlemen’s Guide to Knife Fighting flopped at 8.30pm and 9pm, with 545,000 and 457,000 national viewers respectively. The Knifies had less than 300,000 metro viewers. The early guides for this week have them both in the same timeslots this Wednesday night, but last night the ABC was promoting QI at 8.30pm, after Shaun Micallef’s Mad as Hell, with the Knifies now at 9.30pm, replacing Would I Lie to You (which averaged 462,000).
