A close night now that Seven’s The X Factor has gone for the year. As a result Seven put an episode of Dancing With The Stars into last night, and it backs up again tomorrow night. It was fairly lacklustre, as was Australia’s Got Talent, which picked up more than 200,000 viewers for its final performances. It is not a breakthrough program — it managed 1.579 million national/ 1.074 million metro/ 505,000 regional viewers while Dancing With The Stars had 1.546 million national/ 1.042 million metro/ 506,000 regional viewers). Nine did better in the demos than Seven in metro markets, but in regional markets Seven won by a country kilometre, while the ABC easily beat Ten into third.

Sunday Night and 60 Minutes were OK — not great, not bad. Just average. The interesting program was the JFK: The Smoking Gun special on SBS ONE  with 776,000 national/ 559,000 metro/ 217,000 regional viewers. The silliness of the title was lost on the program’s producers and SBS programmers. Investigating the JFK assassination is a form of cultural archaeology. Ten started a new program called Have You Been Paying Attention at 7pm. With 445,000 national/ 301,000 metro/ 144,000 regional viewers,  not too many people answered the title’s question.

Ten’s new Wake Up breakfast program started this morning, as did Studio 10. The latter looks like a clone of the US program The View with a bloke added to the cast. Nine tried to clone The View a few years ago and failed dismally. This one looks headed down that path. Ten will stay with Wake Up, but I can’t see how it is going to really appeal to other markets being so obviously Sydney. But it’s light, bright and inoffensive as well as offering the chance to win a million dollars, while Seven’s Sunrise and Nine’s Today (new set this morning) are also flashing cash. If you won big from Ten’s cash competition, you’d want immediate clearance from the bank, to be sure of the money being there. But give both programs a few weeks to settle down.Wake Up is less abrasive and milder than last year’s effort from Ten that was called Breakfast. The news is going to be a problem for Ten.

Seven won last week, comfortably in both metro and regional areas and the demos. This week will be much closer.
