Another shocker for Ten. For the second night in a row the network had one of its lowest-ever main channel shares since the Oztam ratings system was introduced 13 years ago. Sunday night saw a metro share of 6.4% for the main channel, last night it “improved” to 6.8%. In regional markets, the main channel share also “improved” to 5.4%, from the all time low of 4.2%.

Ten’s most watched program was Ten Eyewitness News at 5pm with 868,000 national/ 597,000 metro/ 271,000 regional viewers. Ten’s decision to program the animal doco One Life with Daniel Craig for two hours from 8.30pm backfired spectacularly with 295,000 national/ 216,000 metro/ 79,000 regional viewers. This is now the testing period for CEO Hamish McLellan (who reckons Seven’s “in a mess”) and chairman Lachie Murdoch and the board. Will the latter panic as they did with James Warburton? The ABC easily retained third spot nationally and in metro and regional markets thanks to its strong line up of programs viewers wanted to watch. No wonder the Murdoch empire is upset with the ABC; Fancy thinking it could get away with outperforming a family company and also showing up a member of the sainted family!

Ten’s ratings slide overshadowed another close night between Seven and Nine. My Kitchen Rules exploded last night, with 3.123 million national viewers/ 2.124 million metro/ 999,000 regional viewers. That enabled Seven to win the night (but lose Melbourne for a second successive night). Nine’s Love Child did well on its second night with only a small dip in audience from last week’s debut of around 80,000 viewers nationally. It had a very solid 1.882 million national/1.255 million metro/ 627,000 regional viewers. The Block suffered its usual post room reveal let down and averaged 1.594 million national/1.079 million metro/ 515,000 regional viewers. Nine’s News and A Current Affair from 6-7.30 pm did well in metro areas, while in regional areas Nine News still ended up with more viewers than Seven News. Nine News won the 6pm battle in Sydney and Melbourne by 94,000 and 136,000 margins. Seven’s Revenge (1.365 million national/937,000 metro/ 428,000 regional viewers) continued its slow fade .
