Seven’s night as Resurrection blitzed the night on its debut (yes, it’s a spooky US series, but that’s what is the big idea in US TV is at the moment). It had 2.820 million national/ 1.911 million metro / 909,000 regional viewers last night, a very strong start. Seven clearly won all metro markets (including Melbourne where it has been very weak this year) and won regionals as well in convincing fashion. Seven rested Winners & Losers (its back later in the year) to put the short run Resurrection into the Tuesday night slot — it boosted viewing on Seven last night by around 1.5 million people.
But will it last? In the US it started two Sunday nights ago and topped the night with 10.8 million viewers but fell last Sunday night to 9.22 million. It was the most watched program on both nights. Australian viewers are quick to abandon popular imports — just look at the way Homeland, Elementary, NCIS (Ten), Sherlock (Nine), The Blacklist, Downton Abbey and Revenge have faded after very solid starts. It added to the solid performance of the elimination episode of My Kitchen Rules. which had 2.566 million national/ 1.721 million metro/ 845,000 regional viewers. Nine’s The Block was left behind as usual, because it’s not a key night in the program’s week. It averaged a still very solid 1.930 million national/ 1.341 million metro/ 589,000 regional viewers.
And Ten — a 9.0% share in metro markets, and 8.7% in regionals for its main channel meant another night in fourth spot in all markets. Pay TV had a low 11.7% national share of prime time viewing last night for its 200+ channels because of the huge audiences watching My Kitchen Rules and The Block and then Resurrection. Sky News was the most watched channel on pay TV last night, which is an indicator of how weak the night was for the subscription sector. Not one program had 100,000 or more viewers on pay last night.
