Seven’s coverage of Bathurst ended yesterday in a blaze of prangs and last lap dramas. It was the longest Bathurst ever, topping , a minute and a bit under eight hours and topping the 1974 epic (which I actually drove from Brisbane to see — thems were the days). The final 10 minutes had 2.3 million metro viewers.
The Block Glasshouse did the business for Nine in metro markets, but not in the regions where it faltered, surprisingly, allowing Seven to win the night. The Block Glasshouse winner had 3.756 million national/ 2.764 million metro/ 992,000 regional viewers. The auction had 3.238 million metro and regional viewers and the finale (including the Wedding thingie) had 2.475 million metro and regional viewers.
Nine’sGotham’s first episode had 1.695 million national/ 1.238 million/ 456,000 regional viewers. That was solid, but how will it go next Sunday without a lead in of more than 3.7 million viewers? The second episode saw an even bigger turnoff — it averaged 1.190 million national/ 896,000 metro/ 294,000 regional viewers. Overkill and I think it might struggle a bit in coming weeks. Seven won the regional main channels, Nine won the metros.
There was far more drama and mayhem in the car race on Seven yesterday than in the two and a half hours of the finale of The Block Glasshouse last night. That’s not to say there weren’t some dramas on The Block Glasshouse. The end result was a lot of give from three couples and not much take. For the back end of a property boom, the rewards for months of work and living like a slave were mixed — two couples with just $10,000 to boast of, while the winners had $335,000 plus the $100,000 first prize (which seems pretty light on for the complexities of the Glasshouse version of The Block). Even the $40,000 profit for the third couple was not a great return. Nine was the winner, the winners were winners, the runners up were winners ($310,000) the three other couples were ratings fodder and underpaid interns, really. Was this the peak of the current property boom — in Melbourne at least? It sure looked like it last night.
