Brawn beat brawn? Nine’s Footy Show Grand Final programs for the NRL and AFL topped “the rejection” episode of The Bachelorette on Ten. The Footy Show managed 1.365 million and top spot on the national and metro most watched lists. The Bachelorette was fourth nationally with 1.176 million viewers and was fourth in the metros with 875,000. Seven’s Home and Away was the most watched program in the regionals with 480,000 viewers. Ten’s returning Gogglebox managed 797,000 nationally and 563,000 viewers in the regions — about what it ended series one with.
Seven news again topped Nine News in the metros even though Nine News won the east coast markets of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The 5.30pm bit of The Chase Australia easily outshone Nine’s Hot Seat in the metros — 522,000 to 448,000.
Today again topped breakfast in the metros — 331,000 to 291,000 for Sunrise; but News Breakfast on ABC and News 24 had another strong morning and is heading for another solid week.
So, to the weekend: the Hawks v Weagles (who cares? Neither are the Swans) and the Cowboys v Broncos. The Cowboys are top of my list because an NRL premiership would go nicely with all the other honours for Cowboys’ co-captain Jonathan Thurston. And both NRL teams will be captained by indigenous players. Justin Hodges is the Bronco’s captain. And early Sunday (6am to 8am) Australia takes on England in the Rugby World Cup — go the Wobblies!

Top metro programs: None with a million or more viewers.
Losers: Anyone who couldn’t stand the NRL or AFL Footy Show Grand Final efforts — 450,000 in Melbourne was the highest audience anywhere last night, and close to half the metro total of 987,000. The 113,000 in Brisbane was weak for the NRL Footy Show seeing there are two Queensland teams in the GF, including the Brisbane Broncos. In fact, that’s a rejection for the Nine program.Metro news and current affairs:
