Seven might have won overall and the main channels, but its newly recovered 6pm news performance suffered a relapse and it was back to the bad old days with Nine News firmly on top along the East Coast. Not even another metro win by The Chase Australia at 5.30pm with 597,000 over Nine’s Hot Seat, with 560,000, could help.
Seven won the metros and the regionals, but in the metros, Nine dominated the demos thanks to The Block and The Big Bang Theory.
The X Factor now seems to be ex-growth after two weak performances in metro markets this week. The Block hasn’t been all that spiffing as well, but it has done a little better overall in the metros. In the regionals it is a very different story with Seven’s programs winning easily. Adding in the regional audiences and 800 Words was the most watched program nationally with 1.727 million viewers, with The X Factor second (up from 8th in the metros) with 1.583 million. 800 Words had 672,000 regional viewers and The X Factor 610,000. Nine could not compete with that, or with the 528,000 regional viewers who watched Home and Away and lifted it from the pack in the metros to fourth nationally.
A week ago, Seven would have been very happy with its Tuesday night performance. Last night would have left executives perplexed.
Are metro viewers tiring of these reality programs for the year? Although the T&B on The Bachelorette meat market still has its attractions for younger viewers, as we will see tonight.
In the morning though some joy for Seven with Sunrise having a strong win with 364,000 viewers over a surprisingly weak Today on 281,000.
