A close night in the metros, but Nine eventually prevailed. In the regions it was a different story as Seven won easily. Ten was fourth in both areas, with the ABC and its strong news and current affairs line up in third. The Block had a solid night with 1.421 million national viewers for Nine, but its second place in the metros with 1.078 million viewers, was let down by just 343,000 regional viewers. A better regional performance would have seen a top spot nationally last night. By way of contrast, The X Factor on Seven jumped from 1.028 million metro viewers and fourth ranking to top spot nationally with 560,000 regional viewers, just behind the 572,000 for Home and Away.

Seven News did better at 6pm than Nine did because the 5.30 bit of The Chase Australia beat Nine’s Hot Seat with 619,000 metro viewers to 528,000. That narrowed Nine’s winning margin at 6 pm on the East Coast and expanded Seven’s winning margins in Adelaide and Perth. And in the morning, close between Sunrise, which edged out Today by just 5000 metro viewers (it was a larger gap nationally). And that was the night, apart from the strong showing by the ABC with the 7pm News, 7.30, Australian Story and Four Corners all top 10 finishers nationally.

And in the early hours of yesterday morning (very early) around 350,000 people watched the Wallabies scrape home against Scotland in the Rugby World Cup: 186,000 on Nine’s Gem digital channel and 163,000 on Fox Sports.
