Without My Kitchen Rules in the line up, Seven should have run second or even third (Ten had I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here in its line up without opposition). But Seven won, thanks mostly to the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which averaged 461,000 metro and 656,000 national viewers for three long hours from 8.30pm, with assists from Home and Away and strong showings by the 5.30pm bit of The Chase Australia, the 6pm News and the News/Today Tonight, which did surprisingly well in some of the younger demos. Seven won the metros, but won the regionals by a narrower margin.

Seven News won Sydney, 252,000 to 242,000 for Nine News and the metros, along with Seven News/Today Tonight, which finished second. That was down to a strong showing by The Chase Australia at 5.30pm which averaged 582,000 metro viewers, easily beating Hot Seat and Eddie McGuire with 429,000. Nine’s Inside Story at 7.30 – 481,000 and beaten by 7.30 (661), Home and Away (742,000) and Celebrity on Ten with 721,000.

The top five programs in the regionals were: Home and Away (Seven) on 462,000, The Chase Australia (Seven, 5.30pm), 351,000, ABC News 341,000, Nine News, 321,000, I’m A Celebrity (Ten), 321,000.

In the morning Today beat Sunrise by a big margin — 331,000 to 286,000 in the metros — that Sunrise set. It looks very US morning TV, not Australian. nationally Sunrise run with 504,000 viewers, a slim 11,000 in front of Today.
