Seven’s night as My Kitchen Rules, the 6pm news and Downton Abbey did the job last night in metro and regional markets. MKR looked very Masterchef Australia in an outside broadcast.

Australia’s Got Talent made a brief noise for the winner’s announcement. But Nine and WIN, its regional affiliate, couldn’t agree on the coding of the two parts to the final episode: the Grand Final and then the winner’s announcement. Nine split them and WIN didn’t in the early ratings report from Oztam. Therefore the 1.250 million average for the winner’s announcement was Nine’s estimate. The rest of the program averaged 761,000 in the metros and some of the 358,000 who watched the entire program on WIN. MKR had more than 2 million national and over 1.4 million metro viewers. Downton Abbey had a solid 1.305 million viewers across the country. No competition.

The most watched regional programs were MKR with 680,000; Home and Away with 529,000; Nine News, Downton Abbey, 433,000 each; and The Chase Australia 5.30 with 430,000.

Four Corners did a worthy (horrible actually) story on canned animal hunting and stuffing. It lost audience and averaged 680,000 viewers nationally. That’s between 200,000 and 400,000 less than what it it normally gets each Monday night. That saw the audience for Media Watch and Q&A fall. Australian Story had averaged 1.124 million, so the turn off was substantial: nearly 450,000 people.

In the morning Today started with another metro win at 286,000 to 266,000 for Sunrise as audiences were hit by the public holiday in some states. The pie in the face for David Koch on Sunrise didn’t help and was just plain wrong.
