Last week Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss confirmed that US President Barack Obama will be pretty much the only person in the world to get advance copies of episodes of the upcoming season six of the show, which is due to begin airing next week. Not even journalists and reviewers are getting copies this time, after several episodes of the show have been leaked in the past.
HBO might find itself getting those episodes leaked anyway, if a freedom of information request — they call it a FOIA request in the US — is successful. Vanessa Golembewski, who undertook the request, admits it’s probably a stretch to get the episodes using FOI law, but it has already progressed from being submitted to being under review.
Given the slow nature of FOIA law in the US, it’s unclear whether any request would be done by the time the season is finished in mid-June. Hell, Australia’s election will not be over by the time this season of Game of Thrones starts and finishes.
