Seven’s night in metro and regional markets as House Rules and Masterchef Australia did well for Seven and Ten. Seven won total people and the main channels. Ten did well in the demos with Masterchef.

Nine’s exploitation series,The Briefcase crashed and headed for a later time slot than 7.30pm on Monday. Its weak performance impacted the rest of Nine’s programming. Once again Nine has gone too far in a series and been rejected by viewers who do not the way poor people are being deliberately exploited in a nasty program.

The Briefcase had 694,000 national (491,000 metro/203,000 regional viewers). Last week it had 980,000 national viewers (733,000 metro/247,000 regional viewers) so the rejection has been strongest among metro viewers. Overall the national fall was a nasty (for Nine) 31%.

Masterchef held up nicely for Ten with 1.401 million national viewers, but House Rules kept its strong Sunday night performance for Seven and racked up 1.730 million viewers across the country. That meant more than 3.1 million people watched the two programs – still big audiences in these days of fragmenting audiences.

Four Corners with interviews with the PM and the Opposition Leader could only manage 811,000 national viewers, with 581,000 metro and 230,000 regional. Viewers are just over it and those figures were lower than the previous Monday’s sluggish look at the battle between Tony Windsor and Barnaby Joyce in New England. Q&A managed more metro viewers (586,000) but fewer regional viewers, 220,000 less than Four Corners. But it started more than an hour later than Four Corners so Q&A’s share of the available audience was higher and it won the 9.30-10.30pm timeslot.

In regional areas Seven News again led the most-watched list with 693,000 people, followed by House Rules with 679,000, The Chase Australia 5.30pm, 539,000, Seven News/Today Tonight with 517,000, with Home and Away fifth with 493,000.

In Breakfast, Sunrise won easily with 314,000 to a low 284,000 for Today.
