On the “great tax heist” 

John Richardson writes: Re. “Company tax robbery is everything that is wrong with our governance” (Monday) 

While I totally agree with Bernard Keane’s exposition on the planned “great tax heist”, I think we should look beyond the dysfunction of our economy and its causes for the explanation as to how we arrived at where we are today 

I can remember a time (50 years ago) when the economy was regarded as an important component of the society within which we lived, but it was certainly not the only or even the most important component of that society. Starting with Whitlam, progressed by Hawke and Keating and completed by Howard, our politicians succeeded in replacing our focus on the building of a better, more equitable society with a singular focus on developing the economy; to the point where today everything is driven to serve the interests of that empty, soul-destroying beast.

How wonderful then to see the spontaneous, almost universal condemnation of the despicable behaviour of a bunch of spoilt, ugly, overpaid cricket brats.
Maybe there is still hope?

News Corp has aggressively championed the tax cuts. Well, they haven’t any paid tax for years. Indeed this LNP government of economic vandals have, over the years, gifted the News Corp organisation $100s of million in tax refunds.
