Welcome to Crikey Weekender.

Today we introduce a new fortnightly feature: a playlist expertly curated by Charlie Lewis themed around current events. And he’s started off with a bang, with a theme of “bad romance” — we could hardly go past the biggest story of the week.

On that topic, we’ve covered the astonishing revelation that NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian had a five-year relationship with disgraced MP Daryl Maguire, the subsequent details that emerged and the implications for her position. But beyond NSW politics, there’s been plenty of news about, as they say.

We’ve continued to look at the Crown Casino inquiry, and what it tells us about the way business is done in this country. Like so many of you, we’re still closely watching how the virus is being handled in Victoria, and the difference between restrictions in that state and elsewhere. And we’ve also been keeping an eye on upcoming elections: today in the ACT and New Zealand, and Queensland in two weeks.

Have a great weekend,

Apocalypse when? Mike Pezzullo and the end of the world as we know it
Sure there’s climate change and extreme weather events but [Mike] Pezzullo wants us to worry about other stuff straight out of the realm of science fiction: super-volcanic eruptions blocking out the sun; a powerful geomagnetic storm rendering all electronic technology obsolete; a crippling cyber-attack sending us spiralling offline; the threat (seriously) of terminator-like AI; an asteroid hitting Earth; a nuclear apocalypse. — Kishor Napier-Raman
